Bridge Maintenance

PCR carry out extensive repairs and maintenance to a wide range of bridges including highway bridges,rail bridges, cable suspension bridges and viaducts.

Repair and maintenance activities include rivet replacement, web stiffener strengthening, top and bottom flange strengthening, installation of splice plates, resin bonding steel plates, installation of bridge bearings, jacking of bridges, shotblasting and painting steel bridges using ICATS operatives, provision of slung scaffolds, working in tidal zones, ventilation of work areas whilst painting and shotblasting. Bridges are repaired during rail possessions, with all operatives holding PTS certificates. We also comply to London Underground and Network Rail standards and our affiliation accreditors include: BSI (ISO 9001), Linkup and the ORR and have verification to RISQS; policy number 059033.

PCR are certified to the The Register of Qualified Steelwork Contractors Scheme for Bridgeworks (RQSC). The RQSC accreditation allows certified users to work on the following:-

  • Bridges made principally from plate girders
  • Bridges made principally from trusswork
  • Bridges with stiffened complex platework (eg in decks, box girders or arch boxes)
  • Cable-supported bridges (eg cable-stayed or suspension) and other major structures (eg 100 metre span)
  • Moving bridges
  • Bridge refurbishment
  • Footbridge and sign gantries
  • Ancillary structures in steel associted with bridges, footbridges or sign gantries (eg grillages, purpose-made temporary works)

Parapet replacement

PCR replace bridge parapets comprising of ornate cast iron parapets, carbon steel parapets and stainless steel parapets. These are normally removed and refurbished using liquid metal repair for cast iron parapets. During the removal of the parapets temporary barriers are installed until the original parapets are replaced. New carbon steel parapets are supplied by The Ferrocast Post and Parapet System in Polyurethane and are designed to meet the requirements of BS6779: Part 1 Highways Parapets for Bridges and Other Systems; these are manufactured in mild steel and Ferrocast Polyurethane. Other sytems are supplied by Bridge Parapets & Holgate.  We have completed numerous bespoke parapet systems to client specification over the years. We have provided systems in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium incorporating stainless steel wire rope, acrylic and toughened glass.

Our in-house engineers can take architectural and preliminary designs from conception to final manufacure and installation.
