Flue Stub Replacement, Middle East

During the Spring of 2013 PCR were invited to carry out a survey to this 130-metre high concrete chimney incorporating 2 internal flue liners constructed from Carbon Steel and the upper 15 metres in Stainless Steel Grade 304.

Due to the Coastal environment this chimney was suffering from heavy corrosion.

From a result of this survey PCR quickly drew up a specification to the Client, which consisted of full replacement of the external flue stub measuring 4m in height x 4m diameter and the removal of the upper 4m of steel liner and over-plating 11m below this area.   PCR were subsequently awarded this contract and quickly put into place the ordering of specific materials to fulfil this project.

The contract was started within 5 weeks from the end of the original inspection survey and was completed 4 weeks upon entering site

  • Supply of pre-rolled stainless steel grade 304 plates
  • Supply of insulation, strengthening plates and cladding
  • Provided an access system using an cradle to the external shell of the chimney and a scaffold to gain access
  • In addition PCR supplied a suspended scaffold inside the chimney as photos 8 and 10 show
  • Removal of the deteriorated steel, insulation and cladding
  • Over-plated the original stainless steel section below the flue stub / roof level for 11m
  • Fabricated and welded into place new self supporting plate segments for the new flue stub
  • Installed new strengthening plates, insulation and cladding
  • Coated new cladding with acid resistant paint
  • Stripped all access equipment and cleared site
