Roof Degradation & Replacement

Nuclear Environment | Roofing | Asbestos Removal

PCR was appointed to undertake the degradation and replacement of an existing roof within a nuclear environment, providing a complete solution from the controlled removal of the existing asbestos-containing roof through to the installation of a new high-performance roofing system.

The Challenge

The existing roof had deteriorated and required significant remedial works to provide a durable, weather-resistant solution. The project presented additional challenges due to the presence of asbestos-containing materials and the requirements associated with working within a highly regulated nuclear environment.

All works had to be carefully planned and executed to ensure compliance with stringent nuclear site requirements, asbestos legislation, health and safety standards and client procedures, while maintaining effective control of personnel, materials and waste throughout the project.

Our Approach

PCR developed and implemented a controlled programme of works covering the removal of the existing roof and installation of the new roofing system.

The works included:

  • Controlled removal of the existing asbestos-containing roofing materials
  • Appropriate containment, handling and disposal of asbestos-containing waste
  • Preparation of the existing roof structure for the new system
  • Installation of PIR insulation boards to provide the required thermal performance
  • Installation of a Sika polyurethane roofing system
  • Detailing and sealing around roof penetrations, interfaces and perimeter areas
  • Quality control and inspection throughout the installation
  • Careful management of materials, access and waste within the nuclear environment

The works have been delivered using experienced and appropriately qualified personnel, with activities planned around the specific requirements and controls of the nuclear site.

Nuclear Compliance

Working within a nuclear environment requires a high level of control, coordination and assurance. PCR has maintained strict adherence to applicable regulations, site procedures and project-specific requirements throughout the works.

Particular attention has been given to asbestos controls, access arrangements, waste management, environmental conditions, quality assurance and the safe movement of personnel and materials.

The Solution

The new roofing build-up incorporates PIR insulation boards and a Sika polyurethane waterproofing system, providing a modern and durable replacement to the degraded existing roof.

The solution has been designed and installed to provide improved weather protection and long-term performance while meeting the specific requirements of the project and the surrounding nuclear environment.

Project Outcome

PCR continues to deliver the works in a controlled and phased manner, combining specialist asbestos removal, roofing expertise and nuclear-sector experience within a single project team.

The project demonstrates PCR’s ability to undertake complex roofing and refurbishment works in highly regulated environments, from the initial removal of hazardous materials through to the installation of a complete replacement roofing system.
