Isle of Man

In late 2021, PCR were awarded a contract to carry out maintenance work to a 75m high chimney in the Isle of Man. The chimney has 5no flues and we erected a safe access system to allow for internal preparation and over plating repairs to each of those flues. In order to achieve this, a combination of IRATA and ATLAS approved steeplejack techniques were used and a cat-head system was installed to the rim of each liner, one at a time. We installed suspend wires from the cat-head scaffold to a 1metre cradle from the access hole within the ducting and carried out a safe working load test. We prepared damaged areas using abrasive wheel techniques and tack welded purpose made over plating in place and filled with fillet welds. The equipment was transferred to each flue and the stages repeated. We also carried a survey of lateral guides to assess the condition of the guides and measure clearances against a minimum of 5mm and removed flange covers in various areas in order to submit bolts for laboratory testing. All work was carried out on time and within budget.
